9&10 News reported on a Michigan Works facility that had recruiters from Nebraska trying to find employees.  Michigan Works is a taxpayer funded scheme that basically duplicates employment agency services offered by the private sector.  Of course, since Michigan Works is taxpayer funded, they have a huge advantage over their private counterparts.  The program is heavily promoted by politicians as a way that they benevolently (with your money) help out of work workers find work.  It’s all about the worker.

Apparently not.

Both the Governor and a State Rep. were quoted in the story as being “concerned” and unsupportive of the fact that Nebraska (which has the second lowest unemployment in the nation) was recruiting from Michigan (which has the highest).   Of course in reality Nebraska can’t recruit and Michigan can’t work.  Only humans can do that.  But the fact that politicians get upset at this scenario reveals the way they view citizens; as belonging to the state.

If they created Michigan Works to help workers, why would politicians be upset at any opportunity for jobs?  Apparently, the recruiter from Nebraska met with success, according to the story, she recruited 3 workers an hour!  If politicians really cared about workers, they would be thrilled.  Instead, they are angry.  How dare another state steal their taxpayers!

A worker interviewed for the story had a more rational take on the “controversy”;

“I don’t know. I have to take the individualist route on that–if I get employed somewhere, it’s good.”

Good for you maybe, but not good for your elected officials.
